Fabulous Cartoon Review®

Tex Avery's Droopy - The Complete Theatrical Collection

One of, no, the, no, one of the best gifts I got for Christmas this year.

Tom and Jerry and Droopy are the cartoons that I remember the best from formative years watching channel 56.

I already have the Tom and Jerry DVDs and they have provided the kids and I with hours of fabulous entertainment. The Droopy DVDs are fantastic and I still remember some of those episodes that I haven't seen in 25 years. The only problem is that there aren't as many episodes of Droopy as there are of Tom and Jerry. The later episodes from the mid to late 1950s suffer from a lack of imagination and boring artwork, just like Tom and Jerry, but the early episodes are some of the greatest cartoons you will or could ever watch.

You might even get me to admit that I enjoy Droopy more than Tom and Jerry.

Here's a video of my favorite episode, The Three Little Pups . Probably the greatest single cartoon ever produced, man. I've been whistling that tune for years, never really knowing or remembering where it came from.

Come on over and watch it sometime. You have an open invitation.

Flight of the Conchords - Season 2
I recently finished the second season of Flight of the Conchords and I was not disappointed. Just as good as the first. I don't think there are any plans for a third season and thats fine with me. Why mess with a good thing? *cough* The Office *cough*. You owe it to yourself to watch this show.

Anyway, my favorite episode from Season 2 is Unnatural Love. Here's a short bit courtesy of the Utubes. I won't give anything away except to say that Bret and Jemaine are from New Zealand.

Eastbound & Down
Released: 2009
Rating: Unrated
Length: 3 hrs 0 min
Genre: Comedy, TV
Starring: Danny McBride, Katy Mixon, John Hawkes, Andrew Daly, Ben Best
Producer: Adam McKay, Chris Henchy, David Blake Hartley
Writer: Jody Hill
I stumbled upon this TV show by accident (I think it appeared in the Netflix new releases feed) and I was initially excited because Will Ferrell produces it! But then I realized, ugh, Will Ferrell produces it. Later on I was thinking about Blades of Glory and remembered that Will Ferrell produces Eastbound & Down too! But Semi-Pro was on TV one night which reminded me that Will Ferrell is the producer of Eastbound & Down.

As you can tell, I am very conflicted about Will Ferrell, but I decided to add this to my queue and I watched the first season a few nights ago. As my 7 out of 10 rating will tell you, I thought it was good. A few laugh out loud moments, but mostly chuckles. It didn't gnaw its way into my brain (in a good way) like Flight of the Conchords, but I was entertained.

Its crude too. Just warning ya in case such things offend you. And also, Danny McBride, the star, can NOT throw a baseball. He doesn't short arm it like a lot of actors who can't throw do. He even rares his arm all the way back and you think for a second that he can throw, but right at the release point he does this weird wrist flicking motion and doesn't follow through. Very strange.

The IT Crowd: The Complete Season One
Released:
Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Length: 2 hrs 24 mins
Genre: Comedy
Starring: Chris O'Dowd, Richard Ayoade, Katherine Parkisnon, Christopher Morris
Directed by: Graham Linehan
I watched Season 1 of The IT Crowd last night and I have to say that I thought it was awful. Rubbish. It was a struggle to make it through all 6 episodes. Season 2 will not be arriving from Netflix.

If you've seen Extras then the best comparison I can make is to the show within that show, When the Whistle Blows. Laugh track, wigs, goofy glasses and catch phrases are all part of The IT Crowd. When the Whistle Blows was a parody of crummy TV. Am I missing something? Is The IT Crowd a parody or a tongue in cheek send up of something I don't know about?

Doesn't matter. Because I don't care.

Flight of the Conchords
Released: 6/17/2007
Rating: Unrated
Length: 6 hrs 0 min
Genre: Comedy
Starring: Jemaine Clement, Bret McKenzie
Similar to moonshine, at first it was hard to swallow, but I was quickly hooked. One of the most creative shows, in my mind, on television. And I can't get the theme song out of my head.

Need proof?

Extras
Released: 9/25/2005
Rating: Unrated
Length: 3 hrs 0 min
Genre: Comedy, TV
Starring: Ricky Gervais, Ashley Jensen, Stephen Merchant
Its not often that I attempt to force my opinions down people's throats, but I am compelled to do so now. If you don't watch Extras, then you are dumb. I apologize for being blunt, but I believe in tough love. Did you add it to your Netflix queue yet?

How about now?

Deadwood

Just finished watching the third and final season of Deadwood. Man, I can't believe it was cancelled. It truly was one of the greatest shows I have ever watched, and like in the immediate aftermath of watching all three seasons of Arrested Development, I feel like I have lost some friends. Hard drinking, murdering, cussing, and womanizing friends, but friends nonetheless.

Not articulate enough to really describe the quality of the show effectively, I defer to W. Earl Brown who played Dan Dority in the show:

"But DEADWOOD was a rare thing. It transcended craft into that rarified air of art - Art on television as hard as that may be to believe. It did not require a Masters degree in compartive literature to appreciate - there was enough sex, violence, and "f***s" to keep even the most cretinous viewer glued to the tube. However, if one did possess an understanding and appreciation of literature, there were numerous layers of meaning and allusions in that show. It was to the tv western what Larry McMurtry's western novels were to the hand-me-down dime-store books of my youth."

Yeah. What he said.
