Fabulous Movie Review©

Zulu
Released: 6/17/1964
Rating: Unrated
Length: 2 hrs 18 mins
Genre: Action, Drama
Starring: Stanley Baker, Jack Hawkins, Ulla Jacobsson, James Booth, Michael Caine
Directed by: Cy Endfield
Cinematographer: Stephen Dade
Producer: Cy Endfield
Writer: Cy Endfield
Producer: Basil Keys, Joseph E. Levine
Writer: John Prebble
Michael Caine looks like a teenager in this film. In reality, he was about 50.

This movie could have gotten a higher grade from me, but the whole premise bugged me. The idea that a few men, or one stuck up officer, would sacrifice their lives against overwhelming odds for nothing worthwhile when they had every opportunity to retreat is asinine to me. It's not like they were fighting for their freedom or some other oppressed groups freedom.

Anyway, other than that, and I suppose it isn't fair to judge the film by the history it is representing, its a pretty good movie. And its always interesting to listen to people chant unintelligbly and/or speak with a British accent.

Knife Log Wednesday June 17, 2009

I needed a pair of shorty socks, you know, the kind that just come up over the heel, and all mine were dirty or missing, so I cut a regular pair down.

Jeremiah Johnson
Released: 1972
Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Length: 1 hr 48 mins
Genre: Adventure, Western
Starring: Robert Redford, Will Geer, Delle Bolton, Josh Albee, Joaquín Martínez
Directed by: Sydney Pollack
Producer: Joe Wizan
Writer: David Rayfiel, Edward Anhalt, John Milius, Raymond W. Thorp, Robert Bunker, Vardis Fisher
Loosely based on a real mountain man named Jeremiah Johnson, I liked this movie a lot. The scenery, story, fighting and revenge were all well done. Hallmarks of a classic western, although I wouldn't necessarily call this a western. It is set in the west and there are indians and revenge, but thats pretty much where the similarities end. My only complaints are that Redford plays more of a sensitive mountain man than I would expect and there is an undercurrent of hippieishness that I am guessing wasn't part of 1850s America.

Running With Scissors
Released: 10/27/2006
Rating: R (Restricted)
Length: 2 hrs 2 mins
Genre: Drama
Starring: Annette Bening, Brian Cox, Joseph Fiennes, Evan Rachel Wood, Alec Baldwin
Directed by: Ryan Murphy
Running with Scissors is weird and strange and creepy. And not in a good way. I can't in good conscience recommend it to anyone. I think the intention was to make a film...bah. screw it. I have no idea what their intention was, but it couldn't have been this. Fail.

Brian Cox was good as always though. The only bright spot in it.
3.5 out of 10 (Very, very bad)

Not So Hypothetical Social Situation

If you needed to fix a woman's PC would you tell her that you have to go to the bathroom first, then come back a full 15 minutes later with your shirt freshly tucked in and your pants up hiked up to your belly button?

Or

Would you simply say "I'll be back in a few minutes"?

Or

Would you fix the PC first and take care of your bidness later?

Knife Log Tuesday June 16, 2009

I needed to measure my driveway but there was nothing to which to attach the end of the tape measure, so I stuck my knife in the ground and attached it to that. Problem solved.

Body of Lies
Released: 2008
Rating: R (Restricted)
Length: 2 hrs 8 mins
Genre: Action, Suspense
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Alon Aboutboul, Vince Colosimo, Giannina Facio
Directed by: Ridley Scott
Cinematographer: Alexander Witt
Composer: Marc Streitenfeld
An entertaining albeit forgettable espionage film starring the squishy post-modern anti-hero Leonardo DiCaprio, complete with fuzzy facial hair, and my least favorite Australian hothead in a role that would have been perfect for the late J.T. Walsh, Russell Crowe. I must begrudginly admit that Mr. Crowe was pretty good though.

Don't expect to watch this movie and shout to all your neighbors that THIS IS THE GREATEST MOVIE YOU HAVE EVER SEEN, but you will probably look over to the person sitting next to you, or in my case Cat in the Hat and Rocket J. Squirrel, and say, "Not too shabby." Oh and I am contractually obligated to mention that it is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than that Syriana snoozefest from the delightfully hatable George Clooney.

Changeling
Released: 2008
Rating: R (Restricted)
Length: 2 hrs 21 mins
Genre: Drama
Starring: Angelina Jolie, Colm Feore, Amy Ryan, Gattlin Griffith, Michelle Gunn
Directed by: Clint Eastwood
Producer: Brian Grazer, Geyer Kosinski, James Whitaker, Robert Lorenz, Ron Howard
Writer: J. Michael Straczynski
Changeling is one of those movies that starts out slow, remains slow, has an anti-climax and then everything gets wrapped up rather quickly in a neat little package. It also featured my favorite city, Los Angeles, during my favorite time period for movies about Los Angeles to be set in, 1920s to 1940s. I can't complain, because I did want to see it. Not because I like Mrs. Pitt, because I don't, but because it was directed by Clint Eastwood.

Extras
Released: 9/25/2005
Rating: Unrated
Length: 3 hrs 0 min
Genre: Comedy, TV
Starring: Ricky Gervais, Ashley Jensen, Stephen Merchant
Its not often that I attempt to force my opinions down people's throats, but I am compelled to do so now. If you don't watch Extras, then you are dumb. I apologize for being blunt, but I believe in tough love. Did you add it to your Netflix queue yet?

How about now?

It was a slow knife day. Took out knife during a meeting and practiced opening and closing it as quickly as I could.

Gran Torino
Released: 2008
Rating: R (Restricted)
Length: 1 hr 56 mins
Genre: Drama
Starring: Clint Eastwood, Brian Haley, Christopher Carley, Geraldine Hughes
Directed by: Clint Eastwood
I've seen just about every Clint Eastwood movie there is except for Paint Your Wagon (a musical?!) and those ones from the 70s with the monkey in them. A few are bad, coincidentally those are usually ones from the Sondra Locke (think Yoko Ono) years, but many are exceptional. If this is his last film, it is good to see him go out on top.

Gran Torino is exceptional. It has everything a Clint Eastwood movie should have and is everything a Clint Eastwood movie should be.

Knife Log - Sunday June 14, 2009

Cut some string that I used to stake some of my gladioli and sunflowers that had fallen down in a recent rainstorm.

Shaved part of my neck that the stupid hair cutter lady missed.

Removed a hang nail.

Cut the sprinkler portion out of a kiddie pool that had a big hole in it so that the kids could use it in their other pool.

Cut small grape clusters off of the big grape cluster.

Better than a Knife

I'm going to a gun show in a few weeks. I can't decide what I want to get. A 22 caliber seems appealing. With the cost of ammo for this gun I could shoot all day with just the change from the cushions of my couch, but I realize it's kind of a girlie gun, and maybe not something a man should be toting to the target range. Or maybe its not. I dunno.

Here's a Smith & Wesson 22 caliber that I like.

What is a more likely for me to get is a 40 caliber or 9mm like this Smith and Wesson.

I know people who have this gun, and I abhor copycats, so maybe I will go with a Glock 9mm.

Lastly, EVERY man needs a good shotgun. I could wimp out and get a 20 gauge, but I won't. Its 12 gauge or nothing. The only question in my mind is, semi-auto or pump action? I'm hoping somebody can enlighten me on the pros and cons of each. I've never personally used a pump action.

5 Large

Anybody got 5 grand I can borrow? I'm good for it. Really. I am. Going to sell my truck. That should get me 3 of it easy. Please. Anybody? Come ON!

Zero Means Bad

I don't care how many millions of dollars Coke spends on advertising or how much chemically created vanilla flavor they add in an effort to convince me that Coke Zero tastes the same as regular Coke, I will not nor will I ever think that Coke Zero tastes the same. Its not going to happen because it just isn't true. It tastes like Diet Coke plain and simple. So why don't the corporate zipperheads at Coke save themselves some money, fast forward to the point where they eliminate Diet Coke from their soft drink lineup and get on with replacing it with the Zero.
